When Is It Time to See a Psychologist?

Throughout life, we all face emotional difficulties. Sometimes they are manageable; other times they overwhelm us and make it hard to feel truly happy.

Psychological struggles can appear in many forms: mood changes, intense anxiety, increasing addictions, intrusive thoughts, self-esteem issues, and more. Sometimes our environment notices worrying signs before we do and encourages us to seek professional help.

The causes of our difficulties may seem clear—life transitions, relationship problems, divorce, or changes at work—yet we still feel stuck, unable to change our emotions or make important decisions. At other times, we may not even understand why we feel low, angry, or anxious.

Often, the roots of emotional distress lie beneath the surface, connected to early experiences and unconscious patterns. There are also normative life crises and age-related psychological changes that everyone must face. These moments often lead us to reassess our values and redefine what truly matters.

Whether you are seeking answers to a single question or experiencing deep suffering, turning to a professional is always worthwhile. We are often trapped in our own thoughts and cannot see our patterns clearly— or even if we can, our emotions and behaviors may not change without support.

How to Choose the Right Psychologist

One of the most important factors is fit—the sense of connection, harmony, and trust between client and therapist. This relationship forms the foundation of effective therapeutic work.

An accepting, empathetic psychologist who can truly attune to you creates a safe space for openness and growth.

How Can Setting New Goals Help?

At least once in life, everyone reaches a point on their life path when they ponder questions such as what their life purpose is, what the meaning of their life is, and why they live. Some people search for this continuously, yet never seem to find it.

However, the meaning of life is not something to be invented, but something to be discovered!
The religious approach to the meaning of life explains why we live through an external purpose (God or some higher power), rather than an internal one defined by human beings.

Living according to our values leads to an authentic life. If we do not do so, inner unrest will sooner or later take over.

For example, if honesty is one of our core values, we find it difficult to cope when we are forced to lie.

If we do not believe in the meaningfulness of a rule we are forced to follow, we may break it, which can lead to feelings of guilt. Let us see how we can move closer to a meaningful life and to discovering our life purpose.

Self-awareness is the key to making the meaning of your life clear

“The question of the meaning of life, as Buddha said, cannot be taught. One must dive headfirst into the river of life and let the question drift.” (Irvin D. Yalom)

Finding one’s life purpose is closely connected to self-awareness. Life is a finite process in which we continuously develop and get to know ourselves better through our experiences. Our experiences can serve as a kind of compass: if we pay attention to them, we may also find our life purpose.

Helpful reflection questions include:
  • What do I truly value?
  • What do I believe in?
  • What am I good at?
  • What makes me feel fulfilled and happy?
  • What gives my life meaning?

It is worth revisiting these questions from time to time, as in different stages of life our life tasks and life goals may change.

In our younger years, raising a child or children may represent a life purpose.

The desire to create, to leave a mark on the world.
After our forties, finding and expressing ourselves, self-realization, may come to the forefront.

By self-realization we mean shaping our lives according to our own abilities, true desires, and real needs.

Discovering our true desires may arise from a difficult moment, when we are able to look at what our deepest need was at that time.

In a challenging period of life, relationships can provide support; thus, supporting others and passing on our knowledge and life experience can also fill us with a sense of fulfillment, once we become aware of it.

You may feel your life is without purpose if you cannot find opportunities for realization!
Within ourselves, we need to discover those resources that bring us closer to our goals. It is just as important to notice, beyond our inner world, where the gateways are that provide opportunities for us to act for our goals.

A Meaningful Life: Living Each Day with Joy
It naturally brings joy and satisfaction. Of course, in order to notice the joy inherent in our actions, we need to let go of some expectations that have been instilled in us or that we have set for ourselves. Enjoying the simple pleasures of life in everyday moments can bring cheerfulness and happiness. Do not hesitate to discover them day by day.
